Flash the Cache

In a couple of years time all of our PC's will come with flash based drives. Not only will these drives give us an enormous speed boost for normal operation, they will allow "Instant On" just like PDAs today. A simple press of a button and a fully loaded Vista OS screen will appear, ready to use. Pipe dreams maybe, but as flash memory drops in price full sized disk drive replacement drives will be commonplace in our desktops and laptops.

Microsoft have made one small but important step towards this reality with its Windows Readyboost technology. Readyboost allows Vista to use a flash memory stick to provide additional memory cache. Attach a USB 2.0 memory stick to your PC and Vista will prompt you to "Use device to speed up my computer".
